Isolated at Home....
It’s a new year, 2020... after last year’s post I couldn’t find time to upload any new stories about my life in Maldives. The last post I’ve updated had nothing to do with Maldives, but it actually related to few incidents happened in my career-life. So after spending 06 years at the company that I’ve worked in Male’, I’ve decided to move on and look for a new path in my life with the beginning of the year 2020. As a result of moving out of the company, I had to change my current work visa to dependent (family) visa as I can easily live in Male’ under my husband’s company visa. In order to get dependent visa, I left Maldives during February 2020 to start a new phase in my life.
Well what a timing.... everything went smoothly till the Covid 19 AKA Corona virus strikes both Maldives and Sri Lanka at once. In Maldives, my visa process got delayed and in Sri Lanka the government shut down the airport later locked-down the whole country. So now I’m stuck at my parents' house...
I think 2020 is not a good year for anyone, and I know with this crazy virus attack in the world, no one will read this log other than me. It’s being almost 02 months that I’m parted with my husband, and I do miss him a lot. Since I’m in Sri Lanka I cannot tell exactly what is happening in Maldives other that what I’m hearing from my husband and my friends over there. Maldives have successfully
mitigated the spreading of the virus by isolating all the islands by cutting off all the transportation facilities among the islands. Later in Male’city they have closed down all the cafes and restaurants as people tends to gather. All the restaurants started to deliver food to their customers. All the payments now being done through online, debit or credit cards. They have minimized the use of currency as
it will spread the virus among people. Further most of the companies reduced the working hours, some employees are working from home as well. All the resorts are shut down till the situation gets clear and the tourist visa has been cancelled till later April.
Most of the resorts requested their workers (specially foreigners) to leave the country since they are not operating. From 01st April 2020 onward the government started to impose curfew from 5pm till 8pm. This is because they found 6 infected people within Male city and now they have been isolated and investigating for more cases.

My husband said that if this situation continues for 03 months, they will also lose their jobs. His office is also cut down the working hours and businesses are really bad over there. Without profits or any income how can a company pay salaries for their employees... more than Maldivians, most of the companies spend more money in accommodating their foreign employees. So the first thing the companies in Maldives will do is cutting down their foreign staff. So the job security for foreigners like us in Maldives is zero at the moment. Well things are not good for me this year. I really hope this virus madness will clear soon, so that we can go back to our normal lives.
In Sri Lanka things are really bad. Just now when I’m typing this I got a news notification saying 05th person has also passed-away after infected with corona virus. The Colombo, Gampaha and Matara are the badly affected districts and I'm living in one of those districts, Gampaha. We have been shut down for 03 weeks now. And we are purchasing all our essential food and other supplies from home deliveries.

The days are same here, wake-up, eat, do some house chores, watch TV, eat and then sleep.
But one good thing happened with this plague, I now hear all the birds singing in the morning rather than hearing all the vehicle sounds. The environment is so calm, and we all have time to think about ourselves rather than worrying about hectic office life, well there will be more issues which we will face at the end of this virus situation, but till that time we can spend more time with our family members. What I’ve saw in the internet, animals are also enjoying their time without any interference from beastly people.
Anyhow I really hope this situation gets clear soon and everybody can hug and smile again. We have done so many bad things to mother nature and this is kind of revenge she is taking on us, even though (as I believe) this man made virus is killing us all. This is what I've saw on Facebook recently, "we can do whatever on this plant as we please, but at the end the toll we have to pay is unbearable". Remember nothing is free... everything is coming with a price tag.
Be safe! Please be at HOME....!!
