Coffee

Coffee …. It is the most admirable drink among all Maldivians. In Maldives, coffee is basically a way of life, not just fuel to get you through the day.

“Let’s go for a coffee”, “let’s discuss this over a coffee”, are the most common phrases used among Maldivians. Whatever the time you meet them, they are willing to have a coffee. Over a cup of good coffee, you can ask them to grant any of your wishes… believe me, they will. A friendly gathering, a tinder date or an official meeting can revolve around a cup of hot coffee.
Maldivians will pay little bit more or even walk a bit further to get their favorite cup of coffee. Rather than having their morning coffee at home, they will walk to a close-by café. It’s a part of their morning routine, no matter where you work or what position you hold. This really amused me. Being a Sri Lankan who drinks tea (I do love tea no matter what), I find this coffee culture fascinating. No matter what, I cannot function without my morning tea and I’m not visiting any shop to buy my morning tea… But in Maldives it’s different. When I first visited one of the cafés in Male’, I did not know what to order, because there were lot of varieties to choose. And it confused me. If you order a tea at a coffee-shop, your Maldivian friends will be like “tea… really”, still you can get it. But what’s the point of ordering a tea, when you can taste a good coffee. So, when you visit a café better to know what you order and you can discover different world inside the city of Male’.

There is a uniqueness to each and every coffee-shop in Male’. Even though all the cafés are different from each other, they all have something in common, a friendly atmosphere and passion for what they are doing. Most of the coffee-shop owners send their staff to Italy and give them a proper training by transforming them to a barista or they do hire qualified baristas when they are opening a coffee-shop. Coffee is no joke for them… you cannot fool them with a low-quality coffee.

You can find variety of coffees in different flavours. More than grocery shops, you can find coffee-shops in every corner of Male’ city. Super cute little cafés with cozy atmosphere, with a plate of snack and good coffee, you could easily spend half a day reading a book or gossiping with your friends.
